Job costing can be done in QuickBooks Online (QBO) by setting up classes and locations. Matching the class and location in QBO to the location in your business file will allow the P&L by class report or P&L by Location report to become a job costing report. This will also show up in the Project Centre from the dropdown arrow; choose ‘Payroll Expenses’ instead of hourly costs which is the time billing feature.
At the end of this module, you are expected to know the steps in setting up Job Costing through classes and locations.
There will be a knowledge check at the end of this module to assess what you have learned.
By using Projects, you get a better understanding of what the total cost and profit margin for each project is, but you can only see the costs for expenses and bills and the time billing for suppliers or employees if they use the time billing feature. However, what happens if employees are on our payroll but do not use the time billing feature? That’s what this section is about.
At the end of this module, you are expected to know the workaround for this important part of the job costing in each project from payroll.
There will be a knowledge check at the end of this module to assess what you have learned.
Occasionally in Payroll, you may find yourself needing to adjust a pay run as you have been alerted by an error related to an employee’s pay. A couple of scenarios can happen: You realise that the pay run has had an STP lodgement to the ATO, so what happens next? This is what we will be going over in this section. We will also look at adjusting a pay run that has not yet had an STP lodgement but has already been paid by a staff member.
At the end of this module, you are expected to know the steps in setting up pay run adjustments for the scenarios mentioned above.
There will be a knowledge check at the end of this module to assess what you have learned.
Payroll tax is a state or territory tax. It’s calculated on the total wages you pay each month. The state or territory that your employees are located in collects the tax. You pay when your total Australian wages are over the tax-free threshold for the relevant state or territory.
You would know if you had to pay state payroll taxes from your accountant. This is because each month, you will need to provide reports of each state showing the gross, net and Super paid for that period. If you set this up correctly in QuickBooks, you can have the reports at your fingertips.
At the end of this module, you are expected to know how to calculate State Payroll Taxes by utilising QuickBooks.
There will be a knowledge check at the end of this module to assess what you have learned.
Most of the time, in a QuickBooks subscription, only the Payroll Standard has been purchased, so you may need to review the Payroll Plus if you need more features such as Industry Awards.
At the end of this module, you are expected to know the steps in reviewing your client’s business and discuss with your practice manager if you feel that your client would benefit from upgrading to the Payroll Plus features.
There will be a knowledge check at the end of this module to assess what you have learned.
A phone app called WorkZone allows employees to add in their timesheets, apply for leave, access payslips, submit expense requests, view their details and sync to the Payroll Centre. They will then need access to use WorkZone, so setup is done via the Employee Portal, which needs to be set up first (there is no extra charge for this).
At the end of this module, you are expected to know how to download and use the WorkZone app.
There will be a knowledge check at the end of this module to assess what you have learned.
This module talks about timesheets; how managers can create them, import them and how they factor into processing pay runs, among other things.
